Page history last edited by Susan Amirian 14 years, 4 months ago

Marc Andreessen is a well known Internet Pioneer. Andreessen has done it all; he is an entrepreneur, an investor, a start-up coach, a blogger, a multi-millionaire software engineer, the co-author of Mosaic, and founder of Netscape Communications Corporation. Andreessen started off as a college student exploring the possibilities of the World Wide Web. When he attended the University of Illinois he worked for the NCSA (National Center for Supercomputing Applications). This is where Andreessen and Eric Bina created the coding for the web browser Mosaic. Mosaic became very popular, but when Andreessen graduated, the University of Illinois had the rights for the browser and took all credit. He then moved to California and was on a mission to create a web browser that would beat Mosaic. With the help of Jim Clark and a crew of coders, Andreessen created the web browser Netscape Navigator. He was named the cofounder and vice president of Netscape Communications. Later on, AOL acquried Netscape and Andreessen became Cheif Technology Officer for AOL.

^Andreessen featured on the cover of Time magazine.

Since then, Andreessen created a web hosting company called Loudcloud, but soon changed its name to Opsware, where Andreessen hold's the position of Chairman for the company.

Currently Andreessen has been helping early stages of start-ups and invests in programs such as Twitter, Digg, and Plazes. He also serves on the board of directors for Facebook and Ebay. In September 2009, Andreessen acquired a stake in Skype.

Now Andreessen has teamed up with Ben Horowitz, and the two created a Venture Capital Firm called "Andreessen Horowitz". There goal is to invest in the best new entrepreneurs, products, and companies in the technology industry.
